This is one of the most beautiful buildings I have seen. In my opinion, it is definitely the highlight when you visit Lisbon. It is built in the Manueline-style architecture, and it was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.
This monastery was built in the 16th century and it lasted 100 years. The King Manuel I chose the Hieronymite (Jeronimos) order to occupy the monastery since this order’s mission was to pray for the King’s eternal soul and to provide spiritual assistance to sailors and navigators.
It costs 7 euros to visit the monastery and the church’s chorus and they are totally worth it. Even with great number of visitors, the interior has a peaceful air, and either its beauty or the spiritual energy invites to meditation and silence. I have been there twice and both times I had the same feelings.
